2001: A Space Odyssey was written by Arthur C. Clarke and it was published in 1968. Stanley Kubrick worked with him on the book along with the movie. They were based on Clarke’s short stories written for the BBC’s competition.
The plot starts with a monolith which lands on the Earth in Africa three million years BC. The man-apes discover the tools.
In 1999 people had already started to travel to space and they had built the base on the Moon. The people discover another monolith. This monolith sends a message to Japetus, Saturn’s moon. People send their spaceship Discovery One to look for the origine of that message in order to save the mankind.
The space ship is attacked by HAL, a computer. Only David Bowman survives. He turns off the computer and goes to Japetus. He finds out that a Star Gate is the source. When he goes through the Gate, he turns into a powerful being. He manages to stop the missile and saves the mankind.
The summary of the book-2001: A Space Odyssey Arthur C. Clarke
The book starts with a drought. The dinosaurs had disappeared and the apes live in the area of equator. Moon-Watcher’s father died and he goes to look for some berries. Only Moon-Watcher walks upright. They are often hungry. The man-apes meet another group called “The Others”.
All of a sudden, a Rock falls near them. Moon-Watcher examines it, but when he sees that it is not edible, he leaves. The New Rock starts to control the apes. It makes one of the apes to tie the first knot on the Earth.
The Rock starts to train the apes. Moon-Watcher learns how to kill animals with a rock. They start using tools. They even kill a leopard and cut his head off. Moon-Watcher shows their trophy to “The Others”. Their leader One Ear is not afraid so Moon-Watcher kills him.
After thousands of years the man-apes don’t advance much, but they develop physically. Their jaw and teeth became smaller. After the Ice Age, the apes developed a speech and more advanced tools. As the years went by, they started to write. They also developed their weapons from spears to nuclear bombs.
People have developed a space travel. Dr. Heywood Floyd has to fly to the Moon because there’s an epidemic. He lands in Clavius, one of the Moon’s craters where the USA base is situated. Ralph Halvorson tells him about the TMA-1.
