Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel of damned love is one of the most adored stories in world literature. So many generations have been captivated by Tolstoy’s female protagonist Anna Karenina. She is one of the most impressive heroines in literature. Her unhappy marriage and love affair with Count Vronsky are the main themes in the book. Also, Tolstoy explores other themes in the book like jealousy, hypocrisy, faith, fidelity, society, marriage, family, passion, lifestyles of the city and village. The story takes place in Russia in 1861. Parallel we follow a love story between Anna Karenina and her lover Vronsky, and between Kitty and Levin.
The story begins with Dolly Oblonskaya. She caught her husband Stiva Oblonsky having an affair with children’s governess. She wants to leave him. To some extent, Stiva is feeling ashamed but mostly he is feeling confused and dazed. His sister, Anna Karenina, arrives immediately to their house as soon she heard the news. Ultimately, Anna reconciles Dolly and Stiva.
Dolly has a younger sister Kitty. She has two suitors: Alexei Vronsky, a flamboyant and dashing military man, and Konstantin Levin, socially awkward landowner. She decides to turn Levin down in favor of Vronsky. Unfortunately for Kitty, Vronsky soon after meets Anna Karenina and they madly fall in love. Poor Kitty gets ill after that. Levin is feeling depressed after Kitty turned him down so he withdraws in the country.
Meanwhile, Vronsky follows Anna to St. Petersburg. Their common attraction is becoming intense. Anna is married to Alexei Karenin, a government official. She realizes that her infatuation with Vronsky is not just a crush. Soon, Vronsky and Anna meet at a party. She pleads Vronsky to ask for Kitty’s forgiveness but in return he tells Anna that he loves her. Karenin goes home alone from the party with a feeling that something is wrong. When Anna came home from the party, he shares with Anna his suspicion about her and Vronsky. She harshly declines any relationship with Vronsky.
After some time, Vronsky takes part in a military officers’ horse race. During the horse race, he makes a mistake and horse broke his back. The whole race Anna was feeling intense. Her husband noticed that. Karenin again faces Anna with his suspicion about Vronsky and Anna honestly admits that she loves Vronsky and they are having an affair. Karenin is startled with her confession.
