A famous Greek poet Homer is the author of the Illiad. His other well known poem is Odyssey. In Greek language Illion stands for Troy. Illiad is not a story about the Trojan War as many people think. This poem is about Achilles, a brave warrior who was immortal. His only weak spot was his heel.
Achilleus (Achilles): he is the son of Thetis, a sea goddess and of Peleus. He is a worrior who fights in the Trojan War.
Agamemnon: he is Achaian’s warrior, but not a great one.
Menelaos (Menelaus): he is the king of Sparta and Agamemnon’s brother. Helen is his wife.
Helen: she is the reason why the Trojan War started. She was given to Paris by Aphrodite, but she doesn’t like him.
Alexandros (Paris): he is the prince of Troy who is very lazy and doesn’t want to fight in the war.
Hektor (Hector): he is Priam and Hekabe’s son and Paris’ brother. He is a great warrior who fights instead of his brother. He is a very good person.
Priam: he is the king
Hekabe: Hector’s mother
Andromache: Hector’s wife
Odysseus: a main character in Homer’s Odyssey, a tricky warrior.
Aias (Ajax): there are 2 of them. Telemonian Aias is a great warrior who doesn’t get any help from gods.
Diomedes: he is Achaian warrior. The goddess Athena helps him a lot.
Nestor: a wise Achaian worrior.
Patroklos (Patroclus): Achille’s best friend who gets killed.
Aphrodite: she gave Helen to Paris. She is the goddess of love.
Apollo: he starts the fight between Achilles and Agamemnon.
Ares: the god of war. He supports the Trojans.
Athene (Athena): she is on the Achaians’ side because Paris said that Aphrodite is more beautiful than her.
Hephaistos (Hephaestus): he is the blacksmith and the volcano god. He made the armour for Achilles.
Hera: she is Zeus’ wife she also supports the Achaians.
Poseidon: he is Zeus’ brother and a god of the sea.
Thetis: she is Achilles’ mother. Because of her Zeus fights with Agamemnon.
Zeus: he is the main god.
Aristeia: a peak of warrior’s power and strength.
Greeks: there are many names for them – the Acahians, the Dannans or the Argives.
The Illiad consists of 24 Parts. Achilles and Agamemnon have an argument. The Trojans start the fight with the Achaians. Hector kills Patroklos in the fight and Achilles wants revenge. He kills Hector and drags Hector’s body all around Troy. Priam asks for his body and buries Hector.
