The Scarlet Letter
In this book Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about the Puritans who were members of one religious group. They had very strict rules and they often used some kind of punishment for all those who didn’t follow those rules.
Characters-The Scarlet Letter:
Hester Prynne: she is a smart and confident woman, but the citizens punish her because she had an affair.
Arthur Dimmesdale: he is a priest and he has an affair with Hester. He feels guilty because that is a sin and he broke one of God’s Commandments.
Roger Chillingworth: he is Hester’s husband and he wants to punish her when he found out about the affair.
Pearl: she is Hester’s daughter, a bit wild, always running.
Mistress Hibbins: she claims that she is a witch. She is Governor’s sister.
In one Puritan village people have convicted Hester Prynne for having an affair. She has to stay for three hours on a platform. Hester comes with her daughter and people see on her clothes a scarlet letter A. This letter stands for Adulteress. She refuses to tell who her lover is.
Hester’s husband arrives, but he is hiding his identity. He was in Europe while Hester was alone in Boston for 2 years. He tells everyone that his name is Roger Chillingworth and that he is a doctor. He also wants to find Hester’s lover.
He visits Hester in prison. Hester is afraid of him so she makes a promise not to discover his identity. After few years, she gets out of the prison. She works as a seamstress, but people still judge and criticise her.
The Governor decides to take Pearl away. Hester tries to stop him and the priest supports her. In the meanwhile, her husband works as a doctor and he thinks that Dimmesdale is Hester’s lover. He pretends to be his friend and one day the priest reveals him everything. Roger torments the priest. Dimmesdale feels so guilty that he becomes ill.
Hester finds out everything about her husband’s mind games and she tells the priest that Roger is her husband. They decide to go to England together. But, one day the priest loses control and confesses everything to the people. After that he dies. At the end the writer tells us what has happened to the characters. Hester goes to Europe, Pearl marries a rich man. Hester comes back to Boston and she dies there.
