Beowulf was found by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1936. It was neglected for thousand of years before Tolkine wrote his work: “Beowulf: The Monsters and The Critics“.
It is an epic poem and it consists of 3182 lines. It has four accents and the setting is in 500 A.D.
One of the characters is King Hrothgar from Denmark. He built a feasting-hall Heorot for his army and his people. That made Grendel, a swamp creature, really angry. Grendel attacked Heorot and killed 30 people. Grendel is constantly terrorising the kingdom and he takes the possession of Heorot, but not the throne because God has cursed him.
Beowulf hears about Hrothgar’s problems. He is very strong and young. He fights against Grendel and pulles off his arm. After that, Grendel dies in the swamp.
However, Grendel’s mother wants to revenge her son. She takes Aeschere, Hrothgar’s advisor. Beowulf goes after her kills her in the lake.
After 50 years Beowulf is the king in Geatland. A dragon attacks his kingdom. They fight, but the dragon bites him. Beowulf kills the dragon, but he dies of poison. The Geats are afraid for their future.
Summary-Beowulf – J.R.R. Tolkien
Beowulf was written between the eight and the eleventh century. The poem begins with the story of a great warrior Shield Sheafson. When Hrothgar was a ruler, the kingdom was successful. He built a mead-hall Heorot for his people. It was a place where people gathered, ate, sang and told stories.
Grendel didn’t like the noise coming from the mead-hall. Many years ago God cursed him and he was living with monsters. One day he goes to Heorot and kills 30 men.
People are afraid because every night Grendel kills somebody. Finally, he takes possession over Heorot. Grendel is cursed so he can’t touch the throne. Beowulf hears about Hrothgar’s troubles and sails to Denmark with his 14 men. His father Ecghteow was king’s friend. The king heard stories about Beowulf and his strength. He hopes that Beuwulf is there to kill the monster.
Hrothgar tells him a story how his father has killed Wulfings’ leader and he allows him to kill Grendel. Beowulf loved adventures and he wanted to show how brave and strong he was.
Unferth wasn’t so impressed with Beowulf’s stories about killing trolls and sea monsters. He tells him that he has lost a swimming competition against Breca. Beowulf tells him that they were swimming for almost five days when a sea-monster pulled him under the sea. He killed the monster because he had his sword and armour. He tells them that Grendel can’t beat them.
