Herbert is talking to an insurance agent and makes a new life insurance policy. Bobby has dinner with the family and he leaves at 11.
Perry feels the pain in his leg so they have to stop. Dick thinks that his friend will perhaps give up, but that doesn’t happen.
Then the author writes about the next day when Nancy’s friend (her name is also Nancy) comes to their house. She knocks, but no one answers. She calls housekeeper and they go to the farm to check. When they come into the house, they discover the bodies.
The residents of the small and peaceful Holcomb are shocked when they hear the news. They talk about the murder at Hartman’s Café and they assume that the murderer is someone they know.
The murderers have escaped; Dick went to his parent’s house in Oklahoma and Dick went to a hotel. Dick lied to his parents about his trip he told them that he visited Perry’s sister.
Persons Unknown-In Cold Blood
Friends of the family go to the farm to clean it. A detective Alvin Dewey starts the investigation, but since there wasn’t a lot of money in the house, he can’t figure out the motive.
After that, the author writes about the crime scene. Herbert was shot and they slit his throat. He was in the furnace room. Kenyon was also shot in the basement and Nancy and her mother were shot in their beds.
Perry and Dick are still on the run and they stop in Olathe, Oklahoma. They worry about being caught. Perry doesn’t have an appetite and he blames Dick for bad information. They don’t have any money so they write false checks. Back in Holcomb, detective Dewey is nervous, the citizens are afraid and they call him all the time.
The Clutters had two older daughters, but they didn’t live with them. One of them decides to marry because all of her family will be in the town.
The criminals go to Mexico. Perry says that he thought that he wouldn’t be able to commit a murder and he admitted that he lied about murdering a black man. On their way he runs over stray dogs.
They meet a German tourist Otto and they go fishing with him. Since they have no money, they go to Mexico City.
Perry and Dick have to go back to America because they have no money. They chose what to take with them and Perry decides to take a box with his father’s letter.
