Kino: he is a good and hard-working man who works as a pearl diver.
Juana: she is Kino’s wife who is very smart and independent.
Coyotito: he is the son of Kino and Juana. One day he gets bitten by a scorpion and he is shot in the end.
Village Doctor: he is Spanish and he hates Indians. He doesn’t want to help Coyotito because the Indians are poor.
Juan Tomas: he is Kino’s brother and he is very smart and sensible.

Juana and Kino find a big pearl and now they can pay for the medical. The people are jealous and one man even tries to steal it. When Kino tries to sell it, the dealers want to trick him by saying that it is worthless. On his way to a big town, Kino is robbed. Juana doesn’t like the pearl anymore because she believes it has brought them only bad luck. She wants to throw it in the sea, but Kino stops her. Two men attack him and he kills one of them.
Juana and Kino have to leave. Other people follow them. Kino decides to kill those people in their sleep. Juana and Coyotito hide in a cave. One of the men hears Coyotito and starts shooting.
