And Quiet Flows the Don was written by Mikhail Sholokhov, a Russian author. It took him 14 years to write it.
The novel consists of four books. They were published in 1928, 1929, 1933 and 1940. In 1965 he won a Nobel Prize.
The plot takes place during the period of the First World War, the October revolution and the Russian civil war.

The book starts during the period of the First World War. Grigori Melekhov lives in near the river Don with his parents, his married brother and his sister.
Grigori and Aksinia have a love affair. She is already married to a soldier Stephan. The people were traditional so his father Panteley arranged him a marriage to Natalya who was very rich.
They got married, but Grigori wasn’t happy because Natalya was a cold woman. After a while he started seeing Aksinia again.
The communists came to the village and the fights began. Grigori and Aksinia ran away and they found the job on a field. Natalya had his baby and she told Grigori to leave Aksinia, but he refused. Natalya tried to commit suicide.
Grigiri was mobilized because the war had started. He didn’t like the blood and the killings at first, but he got used to it. Due to his bravery and the fact that he was wounded, the army honoured him.
He had a daughter Tanya, but she died from diphtheria. Since she was alone all the time, Aksinia had an affair with officer’s son. Grigori found out and he left her. He went back to his wife.
The war got worse. The propaganda was spreading across the country. Natalia and Grigori had a son and a daughter.
The soldiers were tired, but unfortunately, the October revolution started. Grigori became a Bolshevik. He fought for justice, but he was soon disappointed in the whole situation.
Grigori was shocked when the revolutionary leader killed two officers so he decided to leave the Bolsheviks. But, the killings were happening on both sides.
Aksinia was abandoned by her lover and she retuned to her husband. Natalya got pregnant again, but she didn’t like the idea of having another baby. She died because she had tried to terminate her pregnancy.
