The play begins in the summer, in July. In Verona, another fight breaks out between the servants of the Capulet family and Montague family. Benvolio Montague tries to stop the fight but he does not succeed. Because constant fights and violence occurs between the two families, the Prince Escalus the ruler of Verona announces a new law. Anyone who disturbs peace in the city will be killed. Romeo Montague runs into his cousin Benvolio. Romeo is feeling blue. He tells his cousin that he is in love with Rosaline who does not love him. Benvolio gives him an advice to forget her. He should find another woman, more beautiful.
Meanwhile, Paris asks for Juliet’s hand in marriage. Her father Capulet asks Paris to wait for two years because Juliet is not even fourteen years old. Capulet is organizing a masquerade and is hoping that Paris will win Juliet’s heart at the party. Servant will deal the list of invitations. Benvolio and Romeo meet the servant with the invitation list. Romeo reads Rosalin’s name on the list and he and Benvolio decide to go to the party.

In Capulet’s house, Juliet is talking with her mother and her nurse about probability of marrying Paris. Juliet did not decide whether she wants to marry him but she will give him a chance at the party.
The party begins. Romeo, Benvolio and his friend Mercutio go to the party. Once they come inside, Romeo notices Juliet from the distance and in that moment he falls in love with her. Rosaline is in the past now. While Romeo is watching Juliet, Tybalt Capulet recognizes Romeo and goes furious because a Montague is at Capulet’s party. Romeo finally speaks with Juliet. It is a love at first sight. They do not know each other name, and they kiss. Juliet’s nurse says to Romeo that she is the daughter of Capulet, his family’s nemesis. Soon Juliet finds out that Romeo is a son of Montague and gets also upset. After the party, Romeo sneaks back to Capulet’s estate. He could not stop thinking of Juliet. He sees Juliet in a window and hears her saying his name. Juliet sees Romeo and they exchange the words of love.
