The story is told in the third person. The group of friends share information about their sick friend. No one character’s opinion dominates the narration in the story. They often disagree with each other. Sontag is using long sentences to catch the flow of the conversation. Language is used in the realistic way. The story is describing a realistic situation and offers true historical facts. But it can also be viewed as an allegory. We can see that in Sontag’s use of naming the characters. The main character is not named and neither is his illness. It is hard to believe that people in the real world would not name the man or the illness.
